Why Is Do I Have A Slow Internet Speed?
Diagnosis Problem With 2 Tests: Internet Speed and Computer Errors
Several things can cause Internet browsing problems but through an easy process of elimination we can find the real culprits causing the slow internet connection or other factor. By running these 2 Tests you can quickly narrow down the problem and determine how to fix slow internet issues and increase browsing speed. The tests are quick, easy and cost nothing to run.
It would seem easy to determine that an Internet problem is just that.. a very slow Internet. But there are more things involved that makes this simple diagnostic test worth the little time it will take. The problem can lie with the modem, the router or wireless router or possibly DSL filters or Cable signal interference. Can your Internet make your computer slow? Sure. Most of us don’t ever “unhook” our Internet connection from our pc we are susceptible to spyware programs running in the background of our pc and feeding information online. This whole process should not take more than 10 minutes… and then you know for sure.
Slow Internet Connection Speed
Test 1. Actual Speed of Download and Upload
Internet slow connection issues are usually caused by either the wireless router, a local (home or office) network problem, a slow speed computer / browser, or a slow internet connection. First, we want to eliminate the easiest possible issue which is the actual incoming IPS speed. This is done with a very quick online test from a Speed Test website.
Simply go to this link: Free Speed Test. Once there, just select a city near you and the test will automatically begin. This test takes only a few seconds and will show the actual download and upload speed of your PC’s connection. Below is a picture of the actual test.
Compare different internet connections and speeds: 2.5mb/s download would be considered a very slow internet connection speed. The average is close to the 6mb/s shown on our test pc and the higher end is about 10mb/s. This wide variation is due to several factors: your contract with your ISP; your connection – DSL or Cable (cable can be 2mb/s or more faster); and your ISP’s signal strength in your location.
Your next step may be to call your ISP and let them troubleshoot slow Internet connection themselves online. But first I would try to eliminate the chance that the problem is in your on network or wireless components. We will go into this more on down this post.
Computer Is Slow Online
Test 2. Computer Entry Errors That Affect Browsing Speed
If your Internet speed is high enough, then check for slow speed computer and browser issues. This will show errors and other internal problems that might be slowing computer browser response time down.
Go to this link: Free PC Error Test and see the condition your computer is in right now. Just follow the easy on screen instructions (ps. you might have to click “save” and/or maybe “open” to start with. Also you may need to double click on the “download” – all depends on your operating system). The scan will take only a few minutes and then you decide the next step based on the number of errors found.
The picture (at left) is actual from a real scan. It found 600+ registry errors and a lot of junk files and other optimization issues. But this computer does not have as many errors as a lot of pc’s I’ve tested, with 1000 or more not being unusual. On this computer, as with most of them, the cleanup and repair helped the computer run faster. But the repair and optimization is not free, only the scan is free. So if you do want to let the program cleanup and repair what it found you will have to (just like all registry cleaning software) purchase the program – $25 or so depending on what options you choose. This program is something your pc needs for general maintenance anyway… all computers need this… and not just to fix a poor internet connection and speed.
To let you know that the findings of the scan are not a scam, I have this same run test on new computers and have found almost no errors. I would say if you only have 25 errors or so that your pc is OK in this area and I would not buy the software but go on hunting for the real problem.
If you do decide to go on with the registry cleaning, be assured that it is completely guaranteed and they will refund your money with no questions asked. I’ve used and marketed four different registry repair programs and this has a much lower rate of refunds that the other software programs. It is a good program that has corrected thousands of computers over several years.
Fix Internet Connection
Looking At The Wireless Router, Modem and Network Connection
So if the Internet speed test (test #1) showed that your incoming Internet connection is OK and in test #2 your computer is OK, then you need to look at the components that connect your computer to the Internet.
First go to your network connection (see picture at right) by clicking Start and then clicking “Connected To”. This will show you the available networks within your vicinity. Some may be wireless and you may see one that is hard-wired or non-wireless if you are connected by wire. These connections may be secured or not secured. Just make sure that you are connected to the right one and that the signal is strong.
Next if your Internet signal is not very strong you may try these ideas: Do a disconnect and then re-connect from the network to “re-boot” your network connection – much as you would a computer – it will reset itself and maybe correct the problem; Next, completely turn off and unplug the wireless router for a few seconds and then plug it back in and turn it on – this is like a re-boot as well; And do the same thing with the modem; Finally, you need to straight wire your pc to the the modem, eliminating the router completely and see if that helps.
And one more thing before going to the ISP – which could take a while on the phone – make sure your wireless router isn’t overloaded. How many computers are running at the same time on the Internet? Some “home” wireless routers are really only capable of supporting one or maybe two pc’s. Of course you can test that problem quickly by taking all but one computer off-line and see if there is a difference.
With all this checked out and you still have the slow internet connection speed you should contact your Internet Service Provider for help. They can do their own speed test of your Internet connection and help figure out the problem.
